What 95% Need to Know
Blue Cross is the only Affordable Care Act compliant major medical health insurance provider in every county in Illinois. They provide 95% of all individual/family plans in our state. If you’re one of those policyholders and the policy is renewing, here are two things you need to know.
- You should have received a personalized packet from Blue Cross telling you the cost of your plan in 2021. They were sent by US Mail mid-October. If you didn’t get one, call Blue Cross at 800-538-8833. Don’t touch any prompts, wait until you get a representative.
- You must be current with your premiums…all paid up through December…by the end of the year. If not, the late payment will cover what’s owed for 2020, but not for your renewal and you could lose your 2021 insurance for non-payment.
If you’re new to Blue Cross and applying through them or an agent you have 30 calendar days to pay the first month’s premium (the binder payment). They start counting on the day they send the request for payment. If you miss the deadline, the application will be withdrawn. You won’t have insurance for 2021.
If you’re getting your insurance through the Marketplace (Exchange, healthcare.gov) you must pay the first month’s premium (binder payment) 30 calendar days from the time Blue Cross gets your application from the government or the effective date of the policy. Miss the date and the application will be withdrawn and you won’t have health insurance for 2021.
